2005 Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition
NYU School of Law Team
East Competition, Hong Kong, 2005
Talia Barsam, Bryan Blades, Omer Kimhi, Suzana Medeiros, Jame Ortiz and Rick Susalka spent the fall semester organizing submissions for and planning the moot court competition. After submitting both the Claimant and Respondent briefs, plans crystallized, and in early April, the NYU School of Law team found itself aboard a plane bound for Hong Kong. The team arrived on a Sunday evening with their first oral argument scheduled for the following Tuesday. The opening ceremony was held at the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitration among much expectation. Arguments continued all week against various opponents from across the globe. NYU School of Law received second place honors for their written Respondent brief, and a certificate was presented to them at the closing ceremony.
In addition to the competition, the team had time to explore parts of Hong Kong. Some students decided to hike on a remote, undeveloped island, while others decided to visit a Buddhist temple. Additionally, events organized by the administration of the moot court competition, for example a memorable seafood dinner aboard a large boat heading for an outlaying island, were not to be missed.
The NYU School of Law team was comprised of members from the United States, Brazil, Israel and England, functioning effectively to produce original arguments from diverse perspectives. Receiving funding from the Hauser Global Law School Program allowed the team more time dedicated to preparation for the competition, and intensified the motivation to compete.
