Requirement of Continuous Registration/Leave of Absence

Every candidate for the LL.M. degree must be in continuous attendance by successfully completing at least one course each term, unless a leave of absence is granted before the start of the term by the Director of the Programme.  Leave of absence is granted only for adequate reason and only to students who are in good academic standing.  A maintenance of matriculation and services fee is charged for each term a student is on leave of absence.  These are mandatory fees, and give you access to University Buildings (except for sports facilities and University housing) and provide emergency room health coverage not leading to hospitalization.  New York University Bursar’s Office will issue you a bill for maintaining matriculation fees.  Students are also required to subscribe to the Graduate Medical Insurance Scheme (GMIS) while on leave.

A leave of absence does not extend the five-year period allotted for obtaining the NYU LL.M. degree or the three-year period allotted for obtaining the NUS LL.M. degree.

A second year of leave requires the permission of the Executive Committee in New York. Students who take a leave while in good standing may rejoin the Law School subject to the regulations in force when they re-enter, provided that they have previously applied for and received a leave of absence from the Director of the Programme.

Students who take a leave when not in good standing, fail to return to the Law School upon expiration of their leave of absence, or fail to maintain matriculation by interrupting their course of study without first obtaining a leave of absence may be readmitted to the Law School only by special action of the Executive Committee.
