Law and the Global Economy

Law and the Global Economy

The NYU School of Law and NUS Dual Degree Program (NYU@NUS) offers a rich range of subjects designed for students who want the rigor of a New York University School of Law LL.M. but see the focus of their research or practice in Asia, or in Asia's relations with the rest of the world. By partnering with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Law School is able to offer students a unique dual-degree program with a broad selection of subjects from NYU and NUS faculty as well as a wealth of region-specific and comparative courses. Graduates of the program will earn an LL.M. in Law and the Global Economy from NYU and an LL.M. from NUS.

To complete the NYU degree, at least 16 of 24 required credits must be taken with NYU faculty, many of whom will teach during the period May to August. Students may choose to complete the general LL.M. in Law and the Global Economy or chose an optional concentration. The optional concentrations are U.S. and Asian Business and Trade Law or Justice and Human Rights, each requiring a student to complete 12 credits from a list of eligible courses to be designated. A student's concentration will appear on his or her transcript and diploma.

NUS will recognize coursework taken in pursuit of the NYU LL.M. degree and will require the completion of about an additional four courses of average credit (or equivalent research) taught by NUS faculty to award the NUS LL.M. degree. The additional requirements to complete the NUS degree can be satisfied by taking NUS courses offered during the regular NUS academic year (the Fall semester running from August to December and/or the Spring semester from January to May), accelerated courses offered in the period January-February, or a thesis (or combination of thesis and course work) completed while in residence at NUS. In exceptional circumstances, students may petition to complete the NUS degree through writing a thesis while located outside of Singapore.

Students enrolled in NYU@NUS may also work towards their NUS degree by enrolling in International Business Law courses offered in Shanghai as part of a joint program between NUS and East China University of Politics and Law (January-May or parts thereof). Students will also have the opportunity to complete a 4-8 week internship in a Singapore law firm, corporation, government entity, or NGO in the region.

NYU@NUS was offered for the first time in May 2007. The launch of this program is being celebrated with a generous donation of scholarship funding, allowing up to fifty full-tuition scholarships; for more information about the scholarships and application information, please refer to our Scholarship Program.
