GSAA News

Welcome to the Global Scholar Alumni Association (GSAA)! This newsletter is the inaugural project of the GSAA and the first step in creating a network for alumni and affiliates of the Hauser Global Law School Program at NYU School of Law.

The GSAA aims to actively engage scholars in a vibrant intellectual community, building upon the conviction of the HGLSP that the study of law and legal practice exceeds the bounds of any particular jurisdiction. It provides a forum for dialogue and exchange to continue beyond your physical stay at NYU and to bolster future work and scholarship in the field.

We have an ambitious plan for the development of the GSAA. Future projects may include an Alumni Working Paper series, as well as an interactive website that contains an alumni database, alumni profiles, and global law resources. Many of you have already submitted helpful suggestions for the development of the GSAA, and we welcome any additional ideas you may have for the Association. Please be assured that we are working hard to bring these ideas to fruition, and we look forward to updating you as we make progress in expanding this exciting new initiative!

Please send all inquiries, comments, and suggestions to GSAA@juris.law.nyu.edu.

Letter from Dean Revesz

In a recent letter to alumni, Dean Richard Revesz praised some remarkable new developments at the law school. A great number of these reflect programs and activities of the Hauser Global Law School Program. We invite you to read the letter and see how the HGLSP continues to grow and enhance the work of NYU both in New York and abroad.

Program Developments

NYU@NUS: A Ground-Breaking Law Program for the Globally Minded
New York University School of Law and the National University of Singapore are proud to announce the creation of a new program designed to allow students from around the world to experience two educational arenas, earning Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees from both a leading U.S. institution and a leading Asian law school.

The NYU School of Law and NUS Dual Degree Program (NYU@NUS) offers an NYU degree, the LL.M. in Law and the Global Economy, with optional concentrations in either:

Additionally, students will pursue concurrently an NUS LL.M. degree. Due to a generous donation marking the inception of NYU@NUS, we will be able to offer a number of scholarships for students who enroll in the program.

Based at the National University of Singapore, classes taken as part of the NYU degree will be taught predominantly by NYU professors in residence, with students also benefiting from collaborative teaching by both faculties. Professors Lewis Kornhauser, Stephen Choi, Joseph Weiler, and Philip Alston, along with other members of NYU's outstanding and dedicated faculty, will be among those teaching in Singapore during the program's inaugural year.

In addition to the academic program—which will be in all respects as rigorous as its counterpart in New York—students will be able to opt for internships with a Singapore law firm, corporation, a government entity, or an NGO in the region. Students will also be able to take courses in Shanghai as part of a joint degree program in International Business Law between NUS and East China University of Politics and Law.

The application deadline is December 1, 2006, for enrollment in May 2007. Admissions information and application instructions may be located online at the Office of Graduate Admissions Web site.

Office of Graduate Affairs Joins HGLSP
The Office of Graduate Affairs was created in the Spring of 2006 and is specifically designed to serve the particular needs of graduate students at NYU School of Law, as well as our foreign student populations in our exchange programs and our Diploma program. This office will advise on all inquiries from LL.M., J.S.D., Diploma, and exchange students pertaining to current course schedules, completion of requirements, earning the degree or diploma, and requests for optional practical training. The Office of Graduate Affairs becomes an integral part of the Hauser Global Law School Program and allows us to provide our graduate student population with a "one-stop shop" from application to graduation. Our office also aims to support these constituencies programmatically throughout their Law School stay and it is our great hope that this new structure will enhance the overall experience of our graduate students, both international and domestic.

Global Law Working Papers
The Hauser Global Law School Program supports scholarly work that particularly addresses the law and its practice in a global environment. This initiative is another integral part of the "Turn to Scholarship" envisioned by our Faculty Director, J.H.H. Weiler.
