Hauser Research Scholars

Hauser Research Scholars
Financial and Administrative Provisions

Eligibility
The Hauser Research Scholars Program is open to junior academics from outside of the United States who wish to spend a full academic year at NYU School of Law working on a major piece of legal scholarship. Preference will be given to candidates who have already secured a position at a university. Candidates must be on “tenure track” at their home university.

Expectations
All Hauser Research Scholars must complete a significant piece of original, publishable legal scholarship in English during their year in residence at NYU School of Law.  Scholars must present an early draft at the Global Fellows Forum.  Completed papers will be considered for publication as a Hauser Global Law School Work Paper.

All Hauser Research Scholars are required to be in residence at the Law School for the full 2008-2009 academic year (fall and spring semesters).  Recipients will be expected to fully participate in the intellectual life of the Law School.  For example, they must attend and contribute to the Global Fellows Forum, colloquia, seminars and other such events within their areas of interest.  Appointment as a Hauser Research Scholar will be incompatible with any concurrent appointment or engagement (i.e. practice, fellowships, teaching, etc.) outside the Law School during the full academic year.

Funding
We urge Hauser Research Scholars to supplement the cost of participation in the Hauser Research Scholars Program with sources of funding outside NYU School of Law.

Housing Stipend & Provisions
All Hauser Research Scholars will receive US$20,000 intended to cover the cost of living in New York City for one academic year.  Finding affordable housing in New York City is extremely difficult.  As a result, we have taken the measure to negotiate an agreement with a local real estate agent to assist you with the apartment search.  More information will be provided following admission to the program.

Faculty Sponsorship
All participants in the Hauser Research Scholars Program must have a permanent, full-time member of the New York University School of Law faculty agree to serve as his or her faculty sponsor during the proposed time of residence.  Potential applicants should contact faculty members directly to ask whether they will agree to serve as a faculty sponsor.  If, for any reason, a candidate is unable to secure faculty sponsorship, he or she should contact the Hauser Global Law School Program at law.global@nyu.edu.  Please note that applicants with an affiliation with one of our programs, centers, and/or institutes will be given priority in the selection process (please visit: http://www.law.nyu.edu/pcic/).  If successful in his or her application, those with an affiliation may be appointed jointly to the Hauser Research Scholars Program and to the center, program or institute to which they are affiliated.

Health Insurance
All participants in the Hauser Research Scholars Program must have adequate health insurance to cover them and any family members who will accompany them during their stay in the United States.  Neither NYU School of Law nor the United States government will provide health insurance.  Participants in the Hauser Research Scholars Program must make arrangements for health insurance before they arrive in the United States so that they are covered as from their date of arrival.  The program will provide information on obtaining supplemental local coverage.

Visa Information
If an applicant is accepted as a Hauser Research Scholar and requires entry to the United States from abroad, NYU School of Law will sponsor the relevant visa to enter the country and remain here for the duration of their appointment. It is important to note that, in such cases, proof of funding or assets in the amount of US$2,000 per month of residence in the United States will be required. Those traveling with children must demonstrate they possess US$300 per child for each month in the United States, and US$650 per month when traveling with a spouse or partner. Further information regarding visa requirements will be provided following admission to the Hauser Research Scholarship Program.
