Application Instructions
Application Deadline
The application deadline for participation in the Hauser Research Scholars Program for the 2008-2009 academic year is January 21, 2008. You may download the application for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Required Materials Checklist
The following are all the required materials for application to the Hauser Scholars Program as a Hauser Research Scholar for the 2008-2009 academic year:
Hauser Research Scholars Application Form
Applicants must complete all sections of the Hauser Research Scholars application form and sign where indicated on the last page. Please note that digital or typed signatures are as valid as hand-signed ones. You may download the application in PDF format.
Curriculum Vitae
Applicants must submit a current curriculum vitae or resume that includes all publications to date.
Research Proposal
A well-developed research proposal is a critical part of the application. All applicants must submit a detailed research proposal that describes research questions, the methodology to be utilized, the expected results of the work, and the projected contribution to the field of inquiry. The research proposal should be preceded by a one-page abstract. The title of the proposal should indicate fully the nature of the research project.
Two Letters of Recommendation
Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from academics or legal professionals that can speak authoritatively on the applicant's abilities, specifically as they relate to the applicant's research proposal. These recommendations should be placed in a sealed envelope with the recommender's signature across the seal. *Please see "Mailing Application Materials" below.
Statement(s) of Funding
Applicants must list on the application form the sources and amounts of any monies they expect to receive to fund the time spent as a participant in the Hauser Research Scholars Program. We require all applicants to provide documentation from sponsoring organizations detailing the amount and terms of all monies granted during your residency at NYU. If you are currently employed, please submit documentation from your employer stating any remit you will receive. If you will be self-funded (i.e. you are receiving absolutely no support from a sponsoring organization or employer), that fact must be stated in a separate document and submitted with the application.
Statement of English Language Proficiency
Applicants are expected to have a level of English language proficiency sufficient to write a publishable piece in English. For applicants from non-English speaking countries, proof of English language proficiency, specifically noting oral, reading, writing and listening ability, is required. If the applicant has received a degree from an English-speaking institution, that included examinations in English, the language proficiency requirement is satisfied without further proof. If the applicant has published academic works in English the language proficiency requirement is satisfied with submission of a copy of one such article. For all other applicants from non-English speaking countries, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. Please contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for information on scheduling a test date: Test of English as a Foreign Language, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6151 Princeton, NJ 08541-6151, www.toefl.org.
For purposes of application to the Hauser Research Scholars Program, we will accept unofficial copies of the applicant's TOEFL Score Report.
Recent Publication in English
Please include one or two recent publications in English. Publications should be sent in digital form.
Statement of Faculty Sponsorship
Once an applicant has obtained a faculty sponsor from NYU School of Law's permanent, full-time faculty, the applicant is responsible for supplying evidence of the agreement. All applicants should provide either a print-out of an email confirming faculty sponsorship, or a letter from the faculty member certifying the agreement. *Please see "Mailing Application Materials" below.
Personal Statement
The personal statement must be limited to 500 words. The applicant should respond to the following questions: What are your intellectual and professional aspirations? How do you think the appointment as a Hauser Research Scholar will affect your work in the future?
Mailing Application Materials
Application materials, including the application form, should be sent via email to law.global@nyu.edu, scanning documents whenever possible. Additionally, the applicant should send a paper copy of the entire application to our office by air mail or courier service. In cases where electronic scanning is not feasible, please make sure that the unscanned documents arrive in paper form by the application deadline. Application materials requested from other sources (for example, recommendation letters, statement(s) of funding, and the statement of faculty sponsorship) may be either gathered by the applicant for submission with his or her application materials, or sent separately from the appropriate party.
Because application materials are time-sensitive and may be traveling great distances, we highly recommend applicants use an international express courier service, such as UPS, FedEx, or DHL, in lieu of national postal services. All materials sent for application to the Hauser Research Scholars Program should be addressed as follows:
Hauser Research Scholars Program
Hauser Global Law School Program
New York University School of Law
245 Sullivan Street, Suite 340
New York, NY 10012
USA
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SENT VIA EMAIL AND AIR MAIL OR COURIER. FAXED OR HANDWRITTEN COPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE AND WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO FULFILL THE ABOVE STIPULATION PLEASE CONTACT US IMMEDIATELY.
Review of Applications and Decision Notification
Successful applicants will have outstanding academic records at all levels of university training and a demonstrated commitment to the advancement of their scholarly project and their future professional life as a legal academic. Priority will be given to those applicants that have an affiliation with one of the Law School's centers, programs or institutes. Standards for admission to the Hauser Research Scholars Program are extremely high, but not arbitrary. Once decisions are made by the members of the international committee, candidates will be notified. Candidates who submit all required materials by the application deadline may expect to receive a decision on or about April 1st, 2008.
Any questions regarding the Hauser Research Scholars Program should be directed to law.global@nyu.edu.
