- President of the Law Reform Commission of Ireland (1987-1992)

- Called to the Bar (1954) and practiced as junior counsel in Dublin, specializing in the law of local government, planning and the environment. He was successively secretary and chairman of the General Council of the Bar of Ireland.

Activities
- Until appointed to the Supreme Court of Ireland, he was the High Court representative on the Working Group on a Courts Commission
- Chairman of the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure and of the Courts Service Board
- Chairman of the Superior Courts Rules Committee, the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board and the Judicial Studies Institute until he retired from the office of Chief Justice
- He was actively involved, on behalf of the Council of Europe, in seminars and discussions in a number of the new democracies in Eastern and Central Europe concerned with giving advice and assistance in the establishment of genuinely independent court systems in those countries.
