Rethinking the Cyprus Problem: A European Approach
Introduction
The Hauser Global Law School Program and the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law & Justice at New York University School of Law convened a Table Ronde at Villa La Pietra in Florence, Italy to discuss new approaches to the Cyprus problem. Invited participants included academics, parliamentarians, and policy makers.
The Table Ronde participants were invited to consider two basic models of the problem: the existing approach (the Annan Plan as ultimately modified), and an alternative "European Approach" that has not yet been fully articulated but is rendered essential by the new geopolitical context of which Cyprus is now formally a part and the inevitable substantial role of the EU, its law and institutions in any future solution. A primary objective of this workshop was to explore the various considerations, challenges and problems that might inform a well articulated "European Approach" as set against and in relation to the lessons that might be learned from the Annan Plan.
